Lawyer Marketing 101

Marketing skills are not taught in course of LLB studies and are important skills for legal practitioners to develop. In particular, legal practitioners who are interested to start or grow their own legal practices, should learn marketing skills to attract the right category of clients and cases. Social media pages and websites have became necessary platforms for legal practitioners on which to connect and engage with potential new clients. However, the marketing efforts of legal practitioners remain subject to certain Rules and the Code of Conduct relating to the Legal Practitioners Act 28 of 2014. Do you know the basics of lawyer marketing in South Africa?

About the Coach:

Emmie served 2 years of articles at a big law firm and was admitted as an attorney in 2002. She started her own law firm in February 2005 specialising in intellectual property law and related commercial law aspects.

She started her law firm in Centurion with 4 clients, one of which was her dad! After 11 years, her firm’s FaceBook page had over 15k followers, assisted over 3k leads and had over 1k clients on the books. Her firm served entrepreneurs, SME clients and other attorneys in all SA provinces and overseas.

The nature of her legal practice required a consistent high volume of new instructions to create sustainable and continuous cash flow and income. I explored and learnt different marketing strategies and was the Gauteng BNI Networker of the Year in 2009. She enjoyed training everyone in her office to assist with marketing efforts!

She successfully sold her legal practice in 2016. After taking a sabbatical, she qualified as a SA Business Coach and started a new full-time career in 2017 as Lawyer Coach t/a LawyerFirst serving legal practitioners.

During May 2020, she developed and launched the platform Lawyers Working From Home to assist lawyers primarily with digital marketing.
